David Grieve created his first oil painting at the age of nine. As then, he continues to paint still life and landscapes. The beauty found in the influence of time and change is his constant underlying theme. David's bold palette knife strokes, combined with the texture of the paint itself, draw the observer into the scene where they feel actually present. We constantly sense leaves moving subtly; the trees at centre stage take on a life of their own, while the clouds move in and out of the frame, through a masterful use of deep shadows. The viewer is constantly reminded of nature's immense strength.
David's inspiration comes from walking through pathways in protected natural areas. Recalling the sense of tranquil beauty, David says, "The path itself is like a metaphor for life. It is a journey from the beginning to end, with ups and downs and twists along the path. The sun shines through the open spaces in the canopy of trees, while in other areas, long dark shadows are cast across the pathway."
Currently, the fields that surround Brantford have inspired David's new paintings. These large works feature bold fall colours and lush textured brush strokes.
David has received awards for his work. His works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Ontario and United States and is in the collection of Leon's Corporate Head Office in Toronto, the MAXXCOM Corporation, and BKDI Architects in Calgary, among others.
